Christian reps to meet over Bible issue

PETALING JAYA: The Council of Churches of Malaysia (CCM) and the Christian Federation of Malaysia (CFM) will meet on Tuesday to discuss the issue of the Bahasa Malaysia Bible currently impounded in Kuching and Port Klang.
A source said the meeting would decide on the course of action, including accepting or rejecting the Government's offer of replacing the stamped words “For Christians Only” and serial numbers with just the words “For Christianity”.
The source said they were surprised that another Christian group had acted independently on the matter without the knowledge of either the CCM or the CFM.
The other group, calling itself the Coalition of Malaysian Christians (COMC), lodged a police report yesterday against the Government and the Home Ministry over the stamping (deemed as defacement) of the Bahasa Malaysia Bibles.
The report was lodged at the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters.
On Tuesday, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Idris Jala had said that the 35,100 copies of the Bahasa Malaysia Bible, would be released with the words “For Christianity” stamped clearly in bold Arial font, size 16, with no other words or serial numbers.
Jala, a Christian, said the Govern-ment also agreed to issue a directive that all future Bibles in Bahasa Malaysia could be brought in, as long as they had the words “For Christianity” stamped.
Meanwhile, COMC spokesman Ronnie Klassen said the Home Ministry and the Government need not worry that young Muslims who read the Bahasa Malaysia Bible would convert to Christianity.
“In fact, we know a lot of non-Christians, including Muslim friends of ours, who read the Bible to gain an understanding of the Christian faith and did not convert,” he said.
The COMC, formed a week ago, has refused the Home Ministry's initiative to stamp any text or markings on the Christian holy book and wants the ministry to return the “desecrated” copies of the Bahasa Malaysia Bible to the publisher and bear the cost of new ones.
